Heavy Metal Music

Imagine, if you will, being surrounded by millions of people, waiting in anticipation for the band to come on. You can't breathe because the people are being squeezed into you by their neighbors. You are sweating, trying to catch every bit of oxygen you can from the air, while others are jumping up and down, hitting you as they wait for the band. Finally, the band comes on stage and you are excited, and they start with: (play music here). This, is what heavy metal music is all about. I have been listening to heavy metal music since I was an infant. My first CD was Metallica's Master of Puppets CD that my dad let me have. I have researched many heavy metal bands as the years have gone by. I know what you are thinking, what does heavy metal music have to do with me? Well, metal music is all around you. You can walk down the street and hear someone's radio playing it. You can hear it in some rap songs, like; â€Å"Bring the Noize† by Public Enemy with Anthrax, and â€Å"Let's Go† by Trick Daddy who took the intro of â€Å"Crazy Train† by Ozzy Osbourne, and put a beat over it. You can even hear it in country music from Cross Canadian Ragweed as they took a solo by heavy metal guitarist Dimebag Darrell and put it in their song, â€Å"Dimebag.† Heavy metal music is one of the most copied genres of music out there. Today I am going to tell you about what heavy metal really is, the beginning of heavy metal, and the impact that heavy metal has had on today's society. First, what is heavy metal music? Dee Snider, the spokesman of all that is heavy metal, defines metal as, â€Å"Drum-pounding-, bass-booming-, guitar-distorted-, and singer-belting-music.† That is the worldwide definition of heavy metal. Heavy metal brings together three genres of music, blues, psychedelic rock, and classical music. Early bands included keyboards, or organs, into their music, but recent bands have gone away from using the keyboard. Heavy metal usually, but not always, contains a single formula. A drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer, who may or may not play some kind of instrument. With this formula, it is obvious that their music is purely based on the instruments. A heavy metal drummer uses a larger drum setup than most other rock genres. The singer of the heavy metal band is very important, equally important as the guitarists. The singers can have a large vocal range, like that of Ronnie James Dio of the band Rainbow, or they can be mellow like that of James Hetfield of Metallica. The guitarists' high distortion is the key to metal music. This gives it the heavy metal â€Å"sound.† Also, unlike many other genres of rock, the bassist is important to the band. It is not uncommon to hear a bassist throw in his/her own solo into the song. As a whole, the band uses very high volume. The louder the music, the better. Now that you know what heavy metal is, I will tell you about the beginning of it. The start of metal can be very confusing. For instance, Deena Weinstein, in her book, Heavy Metal: The Music and Its Culture, credited Black Sabbath with the start of heavy metal, but this is not entirely true. Carlos M. Pozo, in his book Caucasion Power Blues, wrote, â€Å"Blue Cheer's cover of â€Å"Summertime Blues† by Eddie Cochrane, is the first heavy metal song.† â€Å"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida† by Iron Butterfly is another one of the earliest heavy metal songs. Then, in 1969, came Black Sabbath. At about the same time as Sabbath, another big metal band emerged. This band went by the name of Led Zeppelin. Even though these two bands did not start heavy metal, they brought it to the public. Sabbath and Zeppelin are two of the most popular rock, let alone heavy metal, bands of all time. They faced much criticism at first, but as more people hated them, others started loving them. These people were the â€Å"rebels†, the ones that did not want to listen to their parents because it was their lives, not their parents'. Because of these â€Å"rebels,† heavy metal's popularity has grown drastically over the years. Regardless of what their parents said, they continued buying heavy metal albums, sometimes they even bought more than usual, in spite of their parents. This sparked rise of heavy metal in later years. That is how heavy metal began, now it is time to learn about the impact it has had on society. Heavy metal has had a drastic impact on society today. According to Encyclopedia Metallica, which is an online website that displays news about Metallica, â€Å"All Metallica albums are banned in Jordan because newspapers called them â€Å"satanists† and â€Å"devil-worshipers.† People were listening to Metallica and destroying things around town, so they had to ban Metallica. During the '80s, parents disliked the heavy metal music so much, they decided to try to get some kind of warning on the albums. This resulted in the Parental Advisory sticker on every explicit CD you see today. This is not the only impact that heavy metal music has had. In 1990, heavy metal band, Judas Priest, were sued because the parents of James Vance, and Ray Belknap believed that Priest's music contained subliminal messages that forced these two men to commit suicide. It was found that these two men were highly suicidal before finding Judas Priest, therefore, Priest were found innocent. This is, yet, another situation where the parents dislike heavy metal so much, that they blame the bands for the death of their children. Sadly, this is a recurring action taken by the parents that will not stop until the hate of heavy metal music is gone, which will not happen any time soon. This is the impact that heavy metal has had on society. Heavy metal music has been alive since the '60s. Even though Black Sabbath are credited with being the first worldwide popular heavy metal band, they did not start it. Heavy metal has become quite popular since it began, and has changed society from day one. So, today you learned what heavy metal music is, about the beginning of heavy metal, and it's impact on society. So, I leave you with a quote from AC/DC, â€Å"For those about to rock, we salute you!†

Everlost by Neal Shusterman Essay

Allie and Nick both die in a car crash. They’re supposed to go towards that light at the end of the tunnel, but they bump into each other and get knocked into a mysterious world between life and death called Everlost. The world is filled with terror, and unexpected twists for the souls that reside there. Both Nick and Allie want their lives back, so they start exploring this new world, hoping to find a way back to their normal lives. There is a catch, however: If they stand still in the living world for too long, they will sink into Earth. The longer they stay in Everlost, the more they forget about themselves in the real world. In the beginning of the book, they are saved by a boy named Lief, who tells them that they are called â€Å"Afterlights†, who cannot walk where the living walk. They are somewhat like ghosts. He warns them of a dreaded and evil monster, McGill, before they make their way to New York City. There, they meet a Mary Hightower, the â€Å"mother† of Afterlights who keeps many Afterlights safe, and author of hundreds of books on living in Everlost. She lives with the children under her care in the destroyed World Trade Center. This is because things that are much beloved in the world can cross into Everlost if they are destroyed. They settle down, but Allie is not content with the way things are, so she sets out to see if she has special powers. Allie notices other Afterlights at the Twin Towers keep repeating and doing the same exact thing everyday. Lief gets stuck playing the Pac-Man arcade game non-stop and she has to pry him from the game to drag him along with her. They meet The Haunter in a factory that crossed over to Everlost. Allie gets Lief and Nick captured by The Haunter and it is shown that Allie can pick up living things and also possess or ‘skinjack’ as it is called in the book. In her adventures, she learns how to use her own powers. These adventures tell Nick his purpose while revealing the secret plan of Mary Hightower and the real identity of the McGill, Mikey McGill, Mary(really Megan) Hightower’s younger brother. Mary, also known by others as the Sky Witch, has been lying to the children, stealing the coins they invariably have in their possession, which will allow them to leave Everlost, a metaphor for the coins given to pay Charon. Nick has also received the nickname â€Å"Chocolate Ogre† because of how he has a chocolate stain on his face, and Mary spreads rumors about how he sends Afterlights away by luring them in with the smell of chocolate. Allie outsmarts the McGill, who is unmasked by his sister. Allie, traveling home, is later saved by Mikey, who takes her the rest of the way home. Setting: The stories in the Skinjacker trilogy takes place in the Everlost. Everlost is the place between life and death that all lost children end up after getting lost in their journey to the afterlife. These lost children, or Afterlights as they are called, are unseen by the real â€Å"living† world. The afterlights cannot interact with the real world (except those with the ability to possess or â€Å"skinjack† the living and will sink to the Earth’s core if they stay still. An exception, is when somebody has died in that spot. They can interact with certain objects that are loved so much by their owners that when the object breaks, it crosses over to Everlost, unbroken, and is given a place there for eternity. The same is for certain places that were destroyed (the twin towers are used as an example) that were love d and cherished by many people and will never be forgotten. There are no adults in Everlost presumably because they know where they are going Character: Alexandra â€Å"Allie† the Outcast: Allie is a 14-year-old girl who ends up in Everlost after the car she is riding in, crashes head on on a highway with the packed black Mercedes that Nick was in. Allie is brave and â€Å"goal† orientated though not a planner. She was reborn nine months later in â€Å"Everlost† as an Afterlight. Allie discovers that she has the gifted ability to â€Å"possess† (or â€Å"skinjack† as it is called in the book) people. She tries to return home to meet her parents in order to put her troubled mind at ease. However, on the way, she and Nick encounters many adventures.[3] Nick: He is 14 years old. A half-Japanese boy who is more of a follower, not a leader. He was riding in a packed black Mercedes on the way to a wedding when he died with chocolate on his face; now he is stuck in formal clothes and a chocolate covered mouth for eternity. .[3] Megan â€Å"Mary Hightower† McGill: The self-proclaimed expert on Everlost, she has written many books on living in the world between life and death. She also thinks of herself as the mother of the many children stuck in this world, being one of the oldest inhabitants at fifteen. She will do anything to keep the â€Å"lost† Afterlights in Everlost.[3][4] Michael Edward McGill, â€Å"The McGill† or â€Å"Mikey†: The brother of Megan McGill. After escaping the by [[Inner core|earth’s core] by becoming a monster ], he encounters a ghost ship where he spends nearly 20 years looting and â€Å"kidnapping† Afterlights after believing a fortune in a chinese fortune cookie that in exchange for 1000 souls, he can return to the land of the living.[3] Travis, alias â€Å"Lief†: An 11-year-old boy Allie and Nick had found in the crossed-over forest. He follows them throughout the novel, until he reaches a state of peace and leaves Everlost through a coin. Before he leaves it is discovered that his real name was Travis. This is how Nick realizes the coins have the power to help the Afterlights â€Å"ge t where they’re going†.

Donor card

â€Å"Sleep after toil, port after stormy seas, / Peace after war, death after life, / does greatly please. † This is a phrase by Edmund Spenser, a 16th-century poet. He asserted death to be a â€Å"pleasant† thing. But it is not the case for many of us. Death is not so easy. In fact, we are afraid of its pain. In fact, we are afraid of its loneliness. In fact, we are afraid of its irrevocability. And it is much more scary if we feel all those agonies even â€Å"after† our death. I am not going to write about horror movies however, but a true story of brain death. And through the arguments, I want you to realize the significance of the decision: whether to own a donor card. Donor card†¦ I guess most of you already know about it. Thanks to that card, you can save other people without any special skills by providing your organs. That is wonderful. When you watch a moving story of transplantation on a TV program, you may have a feeling that you, too, want to be like that â€Å"warm-hearted† donor. Especially, in case of heart transplantation, the donor must be a â€Å"brain-dead† person, who can no longer maintain life but still has a beating heart. If you are wanted and cannot live anyway, you may think you have a clear resolution. However, remember that you always have to pay something if you try to save others. So let me remind you that the â€Å"warm-hearted† donor is a â€Å"warm-blood-running† dead body. Into a soft and warm body, a knife cuts in, and organs are taken out. If that is all, it may not be a problem. But, the body moves, sheds tears, and even has a possibility of feeling pain. That is the reality. It may be only a spinal reflex, but may not be, too. And it may be only a possibility, but may not be, too. The diagnosis by doctors may be done in a right way, but any human-made criteria and human-performed examinations must not always be perfect. There is a fact that the donor is often anesthetized during the extraction, so that the body will not disturb doctors by moving around. Once we are misjudged in the court of death, we can never be allowed to appeal again. And even if the judgment is done in justice, the prosecution itself is fatal in this court. Once doctors start to examine if you are brain-dead or not, they will try it again and again literally till your death. Needless to say, during that testing, you cannot receive appropriate treatments for your recovery, which means, you are locked in the death court until your tombstone gets upon you. In old days, death was something absolute. We got it suddenly by divine will and we could easily tell if someone was dead or alive. However, today human beings refuse the will with their well-developed technologies. As a result, now they have got an extremely significant role of defining â€Å"death. If someone's brain is dead but heart is alive, is he or she totally dead or not? At what point do we regard the brain to be â€Å"dead? † More fundamentally, what is death indeed? Actually, we can never be sure of the answers. They are beyond our capacity. But we have decided to make the answers. So, today our death is human-made. Contrary to such an obscure definition of death, I have an obvious vision for death. I do not want my last moment to be in an agony of organ extraction. I do not want to admit my family's death when they are still moving. I do not want to leave my death to anyone's discretion. I want nobody to face any unexpected misery. And I am sure that I am not the only one. I know that I am a human being who should equally be saved as the recipients. To make my death like peace after war, I do deny writing my will to be a donor. But still, that is my opinion. The important thing is that you get interested in the issue. Today, you can easily get a donor card. But the action must not be easy. To be a guarantor of life, you must take the risk it deserves. And after distress and uneasiness, torment and bewilderment, if you still reach a conclusion of saving others, you should be proud of your devotion. If you reach a conclusion of saving yourself, you should be proud of your cautiousness. If you do not reach a conclusion, you should be proud of your sincerity to life. If you have never thought about this issue, you can start thinking from this moment. Do you really want to help others? Can you be responsible enough for your decision? How can you make your death after life most pleasant?

Replacing Accounting Information System with New Ones Essay

Replacing Accounting Information System with New Ones - Essay Example It is evident that an organization would go out of business unless it effectively meets the changing needs and requirements of its customers and investors. Therefore, it is crucial for every firm to make its systems and processes up to date so as to better serve the stakeholder interests. As Beke (2011) points out, an accounting information system plays a pivotal role in processing financial and accounting data into understandable information used by the firm’s stakeholders including investors, creditors, and managers. An old version of AIS may not meet the current information needs of the stakeholders concerned (particularly in case of publicly traded companies) and this situation would cause dissatisfaction among them. Hence, it is better for organizations to modify the existing AIS on time or install a new one in order to keep their stakeholders satisfied. Such a change would probably assist the company to provide its stakeholders with more accurate and extensive informatio n in lower time frame. Since modern business is based on highly complex processes and practices, stakeholder groups would be greatly benefitted from a high tech accounting information system that enables them to easily assess the company’s financial position. ... Furthermore, the company may face numerous operational issues at the initial stages of the change execution. The following sessions assess the pros and cons of each available option. Advantages of AIS Purchase By purchasing a new AIS system, the company can acquire a potential and powerful system that can meet all modern business needs. This option provides the organization with Oracle team’s assistance in installation, configuration, and testing of the solution. The organization can reduce further system maintenance costs to some extent as this newly installed system can be used for a relatively longer time period. Disadvantages of AIS Purchase The feasibility of a new system may be unpredictable and, hence, the company cannot fully rely on it at its primary stages The company hast to invest relatively higher amounts in change management programs A decline in the total productivity at the initial stages of the change implementation may occur due to employee inexperience Advan tages of Existing System Modification As compared to other options, the process of modification of the existing system requires less installation costs. Since the existing system is modified by its own information system group that is well aware of the firm’s needs, the company can ensure the development of proper AIS. The company does not need to depend much on external parties. Disadvantages of Existing System Modification Modification of an outdated system would be a complex task and hence this process may raise a range of potential issues to the company. If the system modification is not performed in an excellent way, then the company may be forced to spend further costs on the system in near future.

Reflective letter - Assignment Example As such, I will seek to build on my formatting strengths by referring and practicing the Harvard, Chicago, and MLA writing styles as seen in the Purdue Online Writing Lab. On the other hand, I will seek to overcome my writing weaknesses by proof reading my work before submission. I will also do more research on the best writing skills and sentence construction. Using Microsoft PowerPoint by creating effective slides, APA formatting, critical analysis, and timely completion of assignments are items that represent my best work. This is because these items enabled me to address the writing subject in a detailed, effective, and timely manner in different writing platforms using the required writing style. Notably, the first assignment and the PowerPoint assignment were the most challenging assignments. Indeed, summarizing the most relevant information on the slides and achieving the correct sentence combination were very challenging. Nevertheless, I have begun to solve the problem in achieving correct sentence combination by writing more works, researching the best writing skills, and seeking guidance from my tutor. However, I am proud of my writing skills in assignment 2 because they depict my strength in formatting, great sentence combination, few grammatical errors, and objectivity. Ideally, I adopted efficient revision strategies that included class discussions, detailed research at the library, creating a revision timetable, and seeking professional advice from my tutors. I also addressed my peers, tutor review comments, and sought to perfect my writing skills by doing additional writing assignments. My writing, reading, and critical analysis assignments helped me in my writing since they prepared me to read, analyze the derived information, and present such information in writing using the correct writing style. Notably, the PowerPoint essay was the most informative since it taught me how to summarize, use visual

Recycling Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 3

Recycling - Essay Example ce and prevent waste of materials that are useful, minimizes the usage of new raw material minimizes energy usage, air pollution and water pollution and reduced green house effect in comparison to the production of plastic. The key component of the modern waste elimination is recycling (PORTER, 1985). Recycling of glass is the process by which waste glass are turned into some usable products. The waste glass is separated by different chemical compositions. These may also be sorted into various colors. Often recyclers gather glass of different colors separately as glass has a tendency to retain its original color even after being recycled. The glass mostly used for consumer containers include green glass, brown glass and colorless glass (PORTER, 1985). Glass is in very huge amount in industrial and household waste because of its high density and weight. The components of glass in these wastes are usually broken glassware, bottles, bulbs and many more items. A very huge amount of this waste is due to the manual ways of making glass object that has a very high defect rate. Recycling of glass uses lower energy than making glass either from lime, sand or soda (PORTER, 1985). In a home renovation, the effective management of waste infrastructure is needed for treatment and collection where it can be used as a raw material. If we want to renovate our home, so we will first think about what infrastructures can be modified or not; and about glass and wood in the house. Each year in Europe about 1.2 million glass waste tones is producing by renovation and demolition of the buildings. Glass amounts to 0.66% of demolition and construction of the continent of Europe. Either you can dispose the glass off or renovate it. Dismantling is the procedure when glass is taken away from the home and taken away by its kind as per the planned end use. Cullet processing is the time when incomplete quantities of Demolition and Construction glass are used as in there is not a standardized

Friends Owning the Company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Friends Owning the Company - Essay Example The machine was to cost the company $500 thousand. When James returned, and spoke with his other partners, James explained about the machine, and the price of the machine. The other directors think the machine will cost the company too much money at this time, and the other partners are concerned that the company will be obligated to fulfill the contract. However, if a company enters into a contract of such there are certain limitations to how a company can enter into the contract, and make the contract a binding contract. As it is written with only James’ signature on the contract, and that the signature was not witnessed by anyone else the contract is not binding, and is considered null and void. There are only three ways a company can enter into a legal and binding contract. The contract can be signed with the seal of the company, or it can be signed without the official seal of the company. When the contract is signed without the official seal of the company the contract m ust be signed in the presence of two directors. The contract can be signed in the presence of one director, and a secretary of the company. In this case the contract was signed without the official seal of the company. The contract was signed while James was on vacation. The contract was not witnessed by any other director of the company. ... James should have consulted the other partners prior to signing the contract. Because all partners have managed the company together, and have until this time made decisions together. James thought because the machine offered a way of increasing productivity by 20% that the machine will increase the company’s profits. The remaining partners are not convinced that the machine will increase productivity, and increase profits. If the machine does not increase productivity, and profits, then the company might become bankrupt over the obligation of paying for the machine. The other partners do not want this to occur. When James did not consult the other partners in the decision making, he did not follow company procedures. Because the partners of the company have always discussed important decisions like this, and made decisions together, internal procedures at the company were not followed. James should have discussed with the other partners his intentions to purchase the machine. However, James did not discuss his intentions of purchasing the machine with the other partners. The four partners have always discussed important expenditures like this, because James did not discuss with the other partners the machine, and this large purchase the company procedure was not being properly followed. Company procedure is that all partners must discuss important expenditures with one another, and make a decision about the purchase together. Because, company procedure was not followed the company will not be held responsible for the purchase. James was the principle in the agency principle method of signing a contract for a corporation. James was considered to be doing business with the agent of the machines

The demographic imbalance in the UAE and Security Threats Research Paper

The demographic imbalance in the UAE and Security Threats - Research Paper Example The paper first looks at the demographic data with regard to nationalities, then proceeds to analyse how the demographic imbalance threatens local community identity, social structure, economic and political future of the UAE. Demographic data with regard to nationalities and gender Since 1975, the UAE population composition has experienced rapid transitions. The population has grown more than 10 times over this period with the greatest population growth being that of foreign nationals (Al-Suwaidi, 2011). At 12% of the total population (Al-Khouri, 2010), the number of nationals is extremely low compared to that of expatriates, and certain nationalities are predominant within the demographic structure. Analysing the most recent estimated data for 2010 over a five year period, UAE population was estimated to be 8.5 million in 2010 of which only 950,000 were national citizens while 7.3 million were accounted for by non national residents. In 2005, the nationals were estimated to be around 818,000, which implies that the national population growth was at a 3% growth rate. On the other hand, the foreign nationals who were 3.3 million in 2005, more than doubled over the five year period to 7.3 million (National Bureau of Statistics, 2012; UAE Defence & Security Report , 2011). Table 1: UAE Population data 2005-2010 Â   2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 UAE Nationals 0.82 million 0.85 million 0.88 million 0.9 million 0.93 million 0.95 million Foreign Nationals 3.3 million 4.2 million 5.3 million 7.17 million 7.2 million 7.3 million Figure 1: UAE Citizens versus Foreign citizens Figure 2: Population growth trends 2005-2010; UAE nationals versus foreign nationals (data in millions) It has been predicted that if appropriate correctional measures and policies are not taken to address the trend effectively, then UAE national population is further projected to fall relative to the foreign nationals, grossly impacting the demographic imbalance (Al-Khouri, 2010). With the Economist Intelligence unit (EIU, 2010) having forecasted that the population in the Gulf region will be growing by a third over the next eight years till 2020, this poses a serious challenge to the development of the region in the future and requires strong policies to address the imbalances. Analy sing the population composition based on nationalities as presented by Randeree (2009), it can be noted that certain foreign nationals are more predominant than others. The leading nationals are Indians at approximately 36.5% of the population, while the Arabs from other regions and Pakistani nationals follow at 12.7% each. UAE also exhibits a unique structure in its demography with respect to gender - unlike most countries, Emirati male population exceeds the female population, thus by 2010 population estimates there were 479,109 males, while females stood at 468,888 (Randeree, 2012; National Bureau of Statistics, 2012). This implies that ratio of male to female is 1.02 males for every female. The Emirati male to female ratio has been

The Personal Challenge That I Face Essay Example for Free

The Personal Challenge That I Face Essay The personal challenge that I faced mainly dealt with my health. Ever since I was child, I was very sick physically. The doctor recommended that I not play or participate in any type of sports because of my poor health. This led to a lack of confidence in myself to perform my best. I have always thought that there was a barrier somewhere in my life, and I could not pass that barrier because if I did then my life would certainly be in ruins. I was told that no one could perform many tasks at once and be successful. Ever since, I always have an image that if I participated in activities at school then I would do poorly in my school work. I never pushed my limits to the maximum to challenge myself. It was as if there was a wall standing in front of me blocking me from being successful. I was always afraid that the consequences might be permanent and my grades would drop. For years, I have always focused my energy and time into studying and being successful for my future. I never participated in any activities in or outside of school. I would sometimes help my mom take care of the housework because they have to work hard to keep the house financially stable. Maintaining a 3.7 or higher GPA throughout my middle and high school years, I was very happy with my academic accomplishments. In my sophomore year, my vice-principal and counselor encouraged me to join an after-school activity so that I would be qualify to be a member of the National Honor Society during my junior year. I gave a lot of thought to this during sophomore year, and I decided that I should at least try one sport. I joined the softball team, but because of my lack of skills, I was cut from the team. However, I did not give up because my motto is Once you give up, you give up everything including life. I always go by this simple principle and this is what keeps me going on even today. Then I tried outdoor track and found myself struggling and being the slowest person in school. I did not run any race during the meet for that entire year. I was angry at myself for the year. I told myself, If others can do it, then you can too. Throughout my life, I have always tried to challenge myself by trying to succeed. I always have set high standards in myself. I would never let myself be ranked low among others whether it is school work or anything else. At first, I thought that something would have to be  sacrificed because it is natures law to make man not perfect. No one can do well in more than one thing and that is what I believed for the first half of my life. That philosophy however had been shattered by a boy who I met while running for the track team. He was the most perfect boy I have ever met in my life. He was valedictorian of the class of 90 and an outstanding athlete. He opened the gateway to another world for me. I told myself, If He can do it, then I can certainly do it also. From then on, I realized that there is no limit to what a human can do if they put their mind to it. This opened another world to me. I enjoy sports, especially running and swimming. During my junior year, I joined cross country, indoor track, the swim team, and outdoor track. My time in running has improved dramatically, especially during my senior year. I am now captain of the cross country team and co-captain of the swim team. I have improved my time after ever swim meet, track meet, or cross country meet. Even more importantly, I still was able to maintain a very high GPA. This proved to me that I can do anything if I only try. The insight which I have gained from this experience has given me a great boost of self-esteem. I learned that there are no limits to what a human being can do if he or He only does their best. To further prove my theory, I got a job during the summer and kept it during the school year. I am also currently taking four Advanced Placement classes during my senior year along with after school activities. I am doing this to help myself be prepared for college and to further improve my life, because I am spending more time doing other activities such as sports, homework, and going to work. I am hoping to continue being conscientious throughout my college years, as I strive to do my best academically.

Heat of Fusion of Ice Discussion of Theory

Heat of Fusion of Ice Discussion of Theory Measuring the specific latent heat of fusion of water (ice): Introduction In our daily lives, heat can be found in everywhere. Cooking food heat is needed, it also makes people feel warm and produce more energy. Therefore to know the specific latent heat of fusion of water, both we need to know process of the heat was transferred and kinetic energy. The aim of this experiment was to find out the specific latent heat of fusion of water and steam. First of all, heat is a kind of energy, which transfers from one object to another because of their different temperatures. The SI unit of the specific latent heat is joule per kilogram (J kg-1). The specific latent heat of fusion which is the unit used to calculate the energy need to change unit mass of a substance from a solid into a liquid without in temperature. The equation Q=ItV=ML was used to calculate the energy needed from solid to liquid. Where Q is the heat supplied; m is the mass of the solid, L stands for the specific latent heat of fusion. However, in this process, first to be calculated the energy sup plied to the heater and divided it by the mass of ice melted by the heater to find the specific latent heat of fusion of ice. Next is the specific latent heat of vaporization, which was used to calculate how much heat energy for a substance need to change units of mass from liquid into vapour without in temperature. It also defined as the equation is Q=m lv +h â€Å"where lv represents the specific latent heat of vaporization of the liquid and h is the heat lost from the ‘jacket in time t†. Duncan (2000: 69). Finally, calorimeter is just a kind of equipment which uses to measure heat. There are some equations were use in the result calculation. The basic theory of the simple experiment is as above.MethodsPart.1 the specific latent heat of fusion of iceThe equipment of this experiment was two funnels and two barrels, an ammeter and a voltmeter supplied. Firstly, two funnels were filled with crushed ice, and then the heater was put in one of the funnels and left them both for five minutes. During these, the heater reached the temperature of the ice in order to change the ice to water quickly. Next, while turned on the heater, the value of voltage and current were recorded. After recording the values, the mass of water was measured that caught from each funnel in five minutes. Finally, after getting the values of masses, voltage and current, the calculation was done.Figure 1, more ice melts in the side with the beaterPart.2 the specific latent heat of vaporization of waterFinding lv can be done using the equipment below in figure 2. First of all, put a measuring cylinder on a top pan balance and surround the cylinder with lagging. The inside aluminium metal container was measured by electronic balance and the lid keep open. After the measuring cylinder was filled with water, the power was turned on to supply. Then wait the moments until the water came back to the boil. After the water was boiling, the mass of water was recorded and the clock was started. Thirdly, the p ower supply was connected and the power was set to 1100w. Finally, a little of the water in cylinder was emptied to become steam and the mass of water also was recorded. The apparatus in this experiment as in figure 2.Figure 2, the boiling water in measuring cylinderResultsPart 1. In the experiment, the mass of the balance is 79g; the temperature of the water is 100â„Æ';the power of cylinder is 1100W; the time is 3 minutes. And the error of the mass is  ± 1g.DiscussionThe specific latent heat of fusion of ice and the specifi c latent heat of vaporization of water are calculated by the measurement in the tables of result section. The calculation of the specific latent heat of fusion of ice is as follows. Heat lost by water is equal to the mass times the specific latent heat of fusion and the equation is VtI=ML, M is mass of water in difference, t stands for the time taken for heat the ice and L is the latent heat of fusion of ice. ThereforeL ==∠µ=2700J ∠´L=2.7Ãâ€"105Jkg-1 and it is not very similar to the exact value of the latent heat of fusion of ice, which is 3.3Ãâ€"105 Jkg-1. Next part is the specific latent heat of vaporization of water. The heat gained to the water and the cylinder is equal to the work down by the circuit which is 1100W, E=W Ãâ€" t=M lv, which E is the energy gained to the water and the cylinder, M is mass of balance, lv represents the specific latent heat of vaporization of water. From the equation just above, therefore Lv= => and then Lv =2.5Ãâ€"106 Jkg-1. It is also not very similar to the exact value of the specific latent heat of vaporization of water, which is 2.3Ãâ€"106 Jkg-1.According to Duncan (2000:68) â€Å"the kinetic theory sees the supply of latent heat to a melting solid as enabling the molecules to overcome sufficiently the force between them for the regular crystalline structure of the solid to be broken down. And when vaporization of a liquid occurs a large amount of energy is needed to separate the molecules and allow them to move around independently as gas molecules†.
